Thomas Sauvin sammelt seit drei Jahren in Pekings Recyclinghöfen weggeworfene Farbnegative von Fotos aus der Zeit von 1985 bis 2005, der Zeit von Chinas Öffnung zum Westen bis zum Beginn der digitalen Fotografie (vorher gab’s für normalsterbliche Chinesen wohl nur Schwarz-Weiss-Filme zu kaufen). Die bisher mehr als 500.000 Fotos benutzt er für eigene Projekte und stellt sie anderen Künstlern zur Verfügung (es gibt einen tollen Filmausschnitt aus einem der Projekte gegen Ende der Doku).

Emiland Guillerme hat diese schön trockene Kurzdoku über Thomas Sauvin und seine Alltagsfunde im Müll gedreht.

Beijing Silvermine is a unique photographic portrait of the capital and the life of its inhabitants following the Cultural Revolution. It covers a period of 20 years, from 1985, namely when silver film started being used massively in China, to 2005, when digital photography started taking over. These 20 years are those of China’s economic opening, when people started prospering, travelling, consuming, having fun.

Billy Hunt hat einen Ghettoblaster in einen Passbildautomaten mit Lautstärkeauslöser namens »Screamotron3000« umgebaut, der erst dann ein Foto macht, wenn die Person vor der Kamera laut genug wird. Richtig, richtig laut. So laut, dass man nur durch einen Schrei an ein Foto kommt:

Hier noch, was Billy Hunt selbst zu seinem Projekt zu sagen hat, und darunter ein köstliches Video mit einigen Leuten in Action vor dem Screamotron3000:

The Screamotron3000 is an converted boom box that takes a photo when you scream. Think Rube Goldberg meets the Wizard of Oz. By using a machine, I hope to offer a window through the inherently artificial process of portraiture into real human emotion.

To this end, I was partially successful. Believe it or not, people can be just as awkward and self conscious while screaming. Better images often came from me staying in the room, stoking the flame of emotion, and guiding them through the process. The photographer matters. Who knew?

One thing I did not anticipate was the project’s mass appeal. A line of people from all walks of life showed up. They brought dogs and costumes. They cursed and spit at me, called me names and made their babies cry for the camera. Even the press came. Seeing your art project distilled into a 20 second local news clip is surreal, bordering on disconcerting.

What created the demand? Are people clamoring for authenticity in their media, a release of emotion? Maybe it is simple. Just that there are a lot of people who have something to scream about.

Sind wir mal ehrlich:* Do-It-Yourself-Tipps sind wie Kochsendungen. Man schaut einfach nur gerne zu und hat noch nie was davon selber gemacht.
Fotos auf einen Holzklotz übertragen zum Beispiel. Der Wahnsinn. Aber mit an Sicherheit grenzender Wahrscheinlichkeit nie bei mir Zuhause.

Funktioniert auch mit Farbfotos.
»Mod Podge« und »Liquitex gel medium« (letzteres ist ein Serviettentechnik-Lack) gibt es bei Amazon (und bestimmt auch in anderen Online-Shops oder beim Bastelhändler deines Vertrauens). Danke Mona für den Hinweis in den Kommentaren.
